1.  Why does the tour guide suggest walking through Old San Juan instead of riding on a bus or van?

Old San Juan is best seen and appreciated on foot.  Tourists and locals want to experience the Old City to its fullest by going into buildings and taking the time to closely examine statues and monuments. Take a picture where a Hollywood movie where filmed.  The buildings are very close to the narrow streets and your view would be limited by the angle and size of a tour bus’ window.  Your tourist guide will provide you with information of activities you can do on your own. Many tourist have decided to stay at the Old City for lunch, shopping and to watch shows scheduled at the plazas rather than return to their hotels immediately after the tour.

Those who take a sightseeing tour and decide to stay at Old San Juan, have to pay for additional transportation such as a taxi to return to the hotel. This type of tour picks you up, drives you through the city providing only general information and returns to the hotel.  A walking tour allows you to take the time to experience the Old City culture up-close.

3.  How difficult is it to walk?

We paid close attention to the logistics when designing this tour to ensure we have fun walking on shaded sidewalks when possible and have available restroom stops at 2 different sites.  The tour's route was designed for participants that are 65 years of age and older; therefore, easy to walk by everyone.  The walking is mostly flat with some stairs.  The walking distance is 2 Miles with rest stops.

3.  Will the tour take place if it rains?

Yes. The tour is designed to walk on sidewalks covered by balconies. We also enter historical buildings, where we explore their structure while providing historical information and narrating stories and legends. There are also stores along the way where the guide will provide opportunities to buy umbrellas. By the way, pictures of Old San Juan come out beautifully in the rain!

5.  What is the difference between a walking tour and a bus tour in Old San Juan?

A walking tour provides you the opportunity to stop and listen while your guide talks of the legends and history associated with the internationally recognized monuments and streets you will be seeing up close.  Great photo opportunities are possible while walking with your tourist guide and at places that have influenced the history of Puerto Rico and the Western Hemisphere.

On a bus tour you will pass by the historical sites, and your vision will be limited to the angle and size of the tour bus’ window.   The driver has to pay attention to traffic while trying to present basic scripted information.  On the other hand, a tourist guide that only concentrate on you will be able to provide the information face-to-face, answer all your questions, relate some amusing stories and help you take pictures.  While the bus service is better for passengers that have physical limitations, there is no substitute for walking.
