Brief history of Puerto Rico’s film industry

  • Covert Affairs CIA Sexy Spy TV Series, USA Network, with Piper Perabo opening scenes for the first episode of Season 2, was filmed at a beach in Puerto Rico and the Patio and exterior of the hospital at a historical building in Old San Juan. Episode aired June 7, 2011
     

  • The fourth sequel of "Pirates of the Caribbean" with Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz begins filming on October 1, 2010 at Palominito and Palomino Islands.  Johnny will be in the East coast of Puerto Rico since mid September!

2.  The film industry in Puerto Rico begins in the 1940s.

3.  The original movie "Lord of the Flies", a British Novel, was filmed in Vieques and produced by a Hollywood based studio in black and white.

4.  Mr. Bob Hope and Bing Crosby were among United States actors that filmed their movies in Puerto Rico in 1940's and 50's

5.  The 1960's were Puerto Rico's golden film age. Damian Rosa, a local film producer in the 60's, produced films with Hispanics, mainly with Puerto Ricans actors, for the Hispanic market in USA.

6.  Approximately 24 movies in its entirely were filmed in Puerto Rico.

7.  More than 100 movies, partially and entirely, have been filmed in Puerto Rico during the past 20 years.

8.  A 40% tax credit, is one of many incentive Puerto Rico have for film and television projects, making the Island one of the highest in the World.

9. The first Hispanic actor to win an Oscar was José Ferrer from San Juan.

10.  A highlight among the achievements of Puerto Rico’s local industry is the 1989 Oscar nomination as best foreign film for the production Lo que le pasó a Santiago.

11. The Puerto Rico Film Commission was set up to provide all the necessary resources for audiovisual production as well as to promote the development of the film industry in Puerto Rico.  http://puertoricofilm.com/en/

12.  The only store that specializes in selling Puerto Rican films is located at Plaza Las Américas.

13.  Puerto Rico has at least 36 movie theaters in the Island.  Wednesday are ladies day, new releases commence a week after United States and begins on Thursdays.

14.  The film industry continues growing; in 2009 left $54.5 millions for the Island, $17 millions more than 2008.

15.  Jennifer López filming studios will be called “Puerto Rico Studios” which were incorporated on September 2008  in the Department of State of Puerto Rico under JenMar Group LLC.

16.  Governor of Puerto Rico, Luis G. Fortuño, signed on Friday, March 4, 2011a new law that will provide incentives to studios who produces movies in the Island.  The new law is called “Ley de Incentivos Económicos para la Industria Fílmica de Puerto Rico”.

17. The "Ley de Incentivos Económicos para la Industria Fílmica de Puerto Rico”, provides a reimbursement up to 40% in production expenses with a maximum of $50 millions. This new law also provides a 20% tax reimbursement applicable to production costs that covers the salary of none residents crew members and actors.
