Law 22 of January 7, 2000 is known as the Vehicles and Transit Law of Puerto Rico (Ley de Vehículos y Tránsito de Puerto Rico) http://discotech.dtop.gov.pr/

If you decide to live in Puerto Rico, the government accepts transferring updated drivers license from one foreign country and several states from the United States to a local license without taking examine. The only country accepted is Germany.  From the United States:  Florida, Illinois, Maine, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

United States drivers license that require applying and take both examines are Hawaii, Washington, Oklahoma and Rhode Island.  All other states only requires to take the written examine if there license is updated.

  1. In Puerto Rico we drive the right hand lane.
  2. The road signs are in Spanish and all international signs are applicable in Puerto Rico.
  3. You must have an authorized driver’s license. Foreign or United States licenses will only be valid for the first 120 days since your arrival to Puerto Rico. Save your plane ticket, it is your best evidence.
  4. The use of safety belts is mandatory.  Buckle up or pay a fine of $55 per passenger.
  5. Children 4 to 12 years of age are required to be seated in the back. Children under 4 years of age are required to be placed in a safety seat.  Car rentals rent the child seat and are limited in supply.  Daily rental rates.
  6. The speed on highways is between 55-65 MPH; pay close attention to road signs as this will change according to the area in which you are driving.
  7. The roads are measure in Kilometers.
  8. The speed limits are in miles per hour.
  9. Alcohol limit for drivers is .08%.  Don’t drink and drive!  The breath test is mandatory.
  10. School Zone speed limit is 10 MPH, Urban Zone is 15 MPH, except for public zones with 4 lanes or more where the maximum speed is 25 MPH.
  11. It is extremely importance to obey the traffic and precaution signs. Cops enjoys handing out tickets.
  12. Enjoy the ride on the right lane when traveling on the Expressway to avoid to be honk by the local drivers.

Car Rentals

There are approximately 10 rental car companies.  Renting a car outside the airport will avoid paying a 10% airport tax, but you need to pay for taxi services.  Remember to ask your rental car company for a map and to mark the places you wish to visit.  It is very difficult to rent a car last minute in December and January; therefore, make reservations.

Tips:

  1. Bring a copy of your personal car insurance and consult with your broker if it covers accidents in Puerto Rico. This option could be convenient if you are renting a car for a week or more. Remember that you would have to pay your insurance deductible in case of an accident while driving the rented vehicle.

  2. It is more convenient to purchase the full insurance at the rental company for a day or two.
  3. All children 4 years of age and younger must travel in a car seat. A High-rise Auto Booster for older children. When making reservations, inform the company to include a car seat in the rental and ask about the law requirements. It is a daily rate.
     
  4. Upon arrival, Update your GPS with Puerto Rico's coordinates and make sure the programming includes Puerto Rico.
     
  5. Ask again and again to the car rental if the GPS they provide is updated with today's coordinates.  Many times it is very convenient to wait for them to update your rental car's GPS instead of spend hours lost and frustrated.

Choose from three (3) parking lots that are in walking distance of a block to our walking tour's departure location. Parking fee are between $3.50 and $10.00 a day. Two of the parking lots are next to each other on Recinto Sur Street. One is next to the Princess Promenade behind the customs building.

Expressway, highway and main avenues facts:

PR-26 is known, as Baldorioty de Castro Avenue is the main artery through San Juan, connecting Condado and Old San Juan to Isla Verde and the airport.

The Jose de Diego expressway (PR-22) guides you toward the Camuy Caves and the Radio Telescope observatory. The Northern route begins San Juan and ends in the Municipality of Hatillo. Its construction began in 1969 and was completed in 2000. Have coins available because you will pay tolls. As part of its route you will drive on the two largest bridges in the Caribbean, see up close a chain of haystack in the middle of Karst country with a view of the Atlantic Ocean.

When heading south towards the colonial city of Ponce you will travel on the Luis a Ferré Expressway (PR-52), the first one built in Puerto Rico which construction began in 1968 and completed in 1975. A pay toll system was implemented in order to acquire monies to complete the construction.

The third expressway is (PR-53) along the east coast to mid south starting at the municipality of Fajardo to Salinas.

Teodoro Moscoso Bridge:

When driving near the LMM International airport or the Isla Verde hotel area you will see many flags that identify the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge that is over the San José Lagoon. This bridge was completed in February 1994 and its cost was $126.8 million.

Many successful and worldwide marathon runners have been competing in the past 10 years in the most famous 10K race in the world in February. A total of 11,660 runners competed in 2005, one thousand more than 2004. Sports experts have said that the World 10K marathon has the same prestige as the New York, Chicago y Boston marathons.

The view is spectacular when driving both directions. It is the most expense bridge in the world to ride on because the pay toll is $3.00 for a 5 minutes ride or 2,250 meters long.
