San Juan: Legends of San Juan: "Every detail is inspiring"
New  Send this member a messagebdos, Tampa  Jul 7, 2007

The Legends of Puerto Rico is the real thing -- this tour is inspiring while being historically accurate. We were amazed at the depth of knowledge of the guide, and how little details made the rich history of Old San Juan come alive. It's the oldest colonial city in the New World -- the city is a perfect match for this incredible tour!

San Juan: Legends of San Juan: "Limited time well spent"

When you have just a few hours in San Juan, as we did during our recent cruise (5pm to midnight), you want to use your time wisely. We hit the jackpot with Legends of Puerto Rico, and doubly so by having Debbie Molino Ramos as our guide for the Night Tales in Old San Juan tour. Debbie not only guides tours, she's also the Legends of Puerto Rico tour designer, so she really knows her stuff.

Debbie met us at the Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel a few minutes before 7:00 pm, just as the sun was setting. We benefited from Debbie's expertise even before the tour began. We were trying to take some sunset photos with our digital cameras, but they weren't coming out right. Debbie changed a few setting and bingo, professional quality photos! That was worth the price of the tour alone!

We had expected a larger group, and were very pleased to find out that the tour would consist of just the four of us -- my wife and I and the couple we were traveling with. Private tours with Debbie can be very expensive, so we felt fortunate indeed. The tour normally takes about two hours, but ours went nearly three hours. Debbie took us to all the usual places throughout Old San Juan, plus some that most tour guides can't even access. The tour was both informative and entertaining. I learned more about Old San Juan in those three hours than in all the time I spent researching San Juan before the cruise.

After the tour ended we spend another hour or so with Debbie having drinks and dinner at the Parrot Club before we had to get back to the ship. Debbie walked us down to the pier where we said our goodbyes.

I can't express how happy we were with the tour, and I highly recommend it.

We loved the walking tour with Debbie. I felt she got us into areas were we would not have been able to go, and she gave you the history of each location and told stories about what the buildings were and what they were before. If you take her tour, make sure you take your camera! She knows exactly where to have you stand for great pictures. We plan to use her on our next trip

Posted by DonnaC1 at the Cruise Critic Message Board: Ports of Call - San Juan, PR Date posted:  January 7th, 2007, 08:29 PM We just returned from our cruise and really enjoyed our stop in San Juan. We walked around ourselves for the afternoon once we docked at 2:00, and walked up to El Morro fort and through the streets of Old San Juan. The fort was neat, but it was really hot to do all that on foot. I have to say that I enjoyed Old San Juan even more at night. We took the "Night Tales in Old San Juan" walking tour offered by Debbie of "Legends of Puerto Rico" and really enjoyed it. Although we could have walked around on our own in the evening, we felt very safe with Debbie and gained far more of an appreciation for the town on her tour. She was very professional and we were extremely impressed. We would have probably just wandered around but really not have 'seen' everything if we did it on our own. I highly recommend the Night Tales walking tour.  Night Tales in Old San Juan Tour

"Night Tales"- Highly recommended tour for those whose ship is in port in the evening. The meeting spot is right across the street from the pier. Debbie was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable and proud of her country. You cover a lot of ground in the two hours, but there are several spots to stop and sit while Debbie gives you information and stories about the area. She even gives tips on taking better pictures! She was very conscious of keeping everyone safe from the traffic. At the end, she gave restaurant recommendations or directions for those not wanting to go right back to the pier. A very enjoyable tour and much better than wondering around by yourself!

Our ship arrived at 5pm and there was no problem getting to the meeting spot in time.  Carnival Triumph  - Night Tales in Old San Juan tour -February 2006

What's New: An Online Update for Frommer's Puerto Rico

By Darwin Porter & Danforth Prince
July 31, 2004

Legends of Puerto Rico (tel. 787/605-9060; www.legendsofpr.com), is giving some of the best island tours-informative, varied, and entertaining. Walking tours, for example, take in world heritage sites in the once fortified Old Town or else a night walk where a guide entertains with local legends. These tours cost $30 to $38.

Many other island tours are offered, including a coffee plantation tour taking you up into the mountains 2,500 feet above sea level. Other tours explore the lushest parts of the island, including the Karst Country with Puerto Rico's largest hiking trail system; El Yunque (the rain forest), and a mangrove forest near the beach. Private tours can also be designed for individuals or groups.

Bob and I had a great experience in San Juan with the Legends Walking Tour at http://www.legendsofpr.com/

We got a chance to go to areas that we would not have gone by ourselves, through several Columbus Plazas, past old churches, busy streets and really spectacular views of the ocean from the old walls, as well as some private visits.

I'll definitely sign up for this tour again, the small groups are nice. The tour guide, Debbie, really knew her history and she sure loves Old San Juan, and it shows.  Night Tales in Old San Juan tour - January 16, 2006

Just back from the Triumph and took the Legends Night tour with Debbie and it was great! Our ship was set to arrive at 5pm (Miami time, we never left Miami time) and tour start at 6pm San Juan time. Due to weather they said we would be an hour late, needless to say I began to stress (DH says I'm very good at it). Well, we actually arrived at 4:30. It took maybe 5 minutes to arrive at the meeting spot from the ship. Very easy to find. Take a couple of quarters with you, your voucher says to call if running late & they'll catch you up with the tour. The Sheraton Hotel where you meet has payphones 10 feet from the meeting place. Also, have you ever been on a tour that left RIGHT on time? It was a really fun and interesting tour. Debbie really knew her stuff. Be SURE to wear comfortable shoes. As far as shore excursions, in PR we did the night tales with Debbie from Legends of Puerto Rico. We all enjoyed that, however I don't think I would have enjoyed this port without some sort of excursion.  Family of 6 - January 9, 2006 - Night Tales in Old San Juan tour

We were in port at 4:30p.m on Carnival and knew we didn't have a lot of time to do much . We had read about the OSJ night tales legends tour which is from 6 p.m. til 8 p.m. We booked this after reading about it on the website and other reviews. It is a walking tour. We had an 8 & 10 yr. old with us and Debbie (the tour guide) was the greatest. She gave us not only some wonderful history of OSJ but enough suspense stories for the kids to want to hear more. She took us to places that had to be unlocked for us to see inside and learn the history and see the beauty within. If you want something different than the same old tour stuff Night Tales is the tour for you. You get back to the town square at 8, plenty of time to grab a bite to eat if you want, but we took the kids back to the ship.

We did this tour with Debbie before our 12/11 cruise on AOS. It was wonderful.  Debbie is a great storyteller and her enthusiasm and love of the city are very evident as the evening unfolds. I highly recommend this tour!

I have to agree with TravelAway. We also did the Night Tales of Old San Juan with Debbie and it was fantastic. She is a great storyteller. You will come away from this tour with a vivid image of the history of this beautiful city. Afterwards we had a fabulous dinner of paella and tapas at Divino Bocadito on Calle Cruz. There was even a flamenco show (no cover charge). Debbie was kind enough to escort us to the restaurant - she even went inside to get us a table. I highly recommend her tour. You won't regret it. Her website is called Legends of Puerto Rico.  Night Tales in Old  San Juan tour

SHOWCAT-My DH and I just took it August 29th. We HIGHLY recommend it. Debbie was our guide and she was so sweet, insightful and got us into so many areas that a bus tour would never/couldn't take you. She could not have timed it more perfectly, at one point during the tour, we were over looking the water RIGHT at sunset. You will be able to learn so much history, while taking some GREAT photos. And she was great, that she would take the photos (she has a back ground in photography) of my husband and myself TOGETHER. We were in Old San Juan from 2-10 ish. so after we walked to El Morro Castle ourselves in the afternoon, we were able to see this beautiful city at night. And she seems to know everyone, so I felt very safe. We are planning on going back next year with my parents and we are going to take her tour again. Enjoy!  Navigator of the Seas, August 29, 2005 - Night Tales in Old San Juan tour

We took a night walking tour last Monday (August 1, 2005) with Legends of Puerto Rico and I would highly recommend it!  We had a party of twelve and 6 of those were ages 4-7. This was a great choice for a more fun tour. Debbie tells some great stories and there is no way we could have put something better together ourselves. This got the "favorite thing vote" about the cruise from one of the kids.

She was able to get us into buildings not open to the public. The kids were just entranced with the stories and the tour is planned so every time we turned a corner there was a beautiful view.

It was a two hour tour with sitting stops while she told stories.  If I can answer any questions, I will.

If you are in San Juan for only a late afternoon, evening stop this is a really wonderful tour.

If you enjoy beautiful architecture and history, plan to spend a day in Old San Juan...it's truly lovely. We suggest doing the Night tour of OSJ with Debbie of Legends of Puerto Rico; it's a great tour and Debbie really knows her stuff.

We were in San Juan last Jan and did a walking tour of the city with Debbie Ramos-She has a great tour and a very nice lady who has a couple of great walking tours of the city. You can go to her site www.legendsofpr.com and get her info. She took us to places that were very interesting and where many people don't get a chance to see. We stopped for a drink, and was very informal and friendly tour. Debbie spoke to everyone as we walked around. She is a local lady with lots of good stories. Hope this helps. If you need more info just holler. Take care, Knarf (Frank backwards)

Posted at the Cruise Critic Message Board: Ports of Call - San Juan, PR - Date posted: May 11, 2005 - Me, my wife, and my 3 year old boy took a Legend night tale walking tour. The tour guide Debbie knows a lot about Old San Juan. We met the tour at a Art Deco building which is about 10 to 15 minute walk from the pier. When we were at San Juan (4/25) it was a hot and very humid day. We ended up sitting at the yellow tourist office building over half an hour because they have ac. They also serve complimentary rum punch. Debbie knows a lot about the history of Old San Juan. She uses story telling on different places ... etc. She also brings you to a couple of places that were closed and still let you get in. I am surprised my 3 year old boy can keep up for almost 2 hours on that tour. I highly recommend this walking tour. I think you can find more details on this tour from other thread. Evening walking tour of San Juan  Just got back from San Juan and wanted to let you all know what a wonderful tour we booked through Legends of San Juan. We took the evening walking tour (Night Tales in Old San Juan). Debbie was awesome and a delightful guide. She was full of all sorts of interesting info and got us into buildings that were not open to the general public. I just wish that we had more than 2 hours with her as I know she had a lot more info to share!

We were even more grateful when we got back on our ship and talked to people who took the cruise line's "walking tour". It consisted of loading up with 100's of people on buses (Debbie's groups are only around 15 people), getting dropped off at a corner and being given 30 minutes to shop and meet the bus at the other end of the street. The remainder of their "walking tour" was done by bus. No comparison!

So, if you are going to be in San Juan and are looking for a local tour that will be worthwhile choose Debbie Molina Ramos and Legends of San Juan Tours.

We did the night time walking tour in March and loved it- afterwards, Debbie took us to her favorite restaurant, helped us order and joined for a bit- it was wonderful and a very local place. Just got back from OSJ 3 days ago. We did the night tale with Debra and had a great time. We checked into the cruise ship at 4pm, met Debra at 6pm, did the walk until 8 pm and were back on the ship by 8:30. [Pan-American Pier]

We walked the whole OSJ area on another night (just me and my wife) and felt safe the whole time. Many if not most of the homes are VERY expensive and we did not see any "low income" areas at all. James Lawson, USA - Night Tales in Old San Juan tour, February 12, 2005 - Cruise ship passengers.

Tour Survey comments:  The tour was awesome!  We really enjoyed ourselves! Debbie even took us to a dinner spot for locals and the meal was one of the top highlights of our whole trip. She went out of her way to point out the great photo spots and took pictures of us. We were quite proud of telling everyone else on the ship about our experience and we were able to see things that others did not see on their tours. I think our experience in San Juan was much fulfilling than those that took the ship's tour and it definitely has made me want to return to San Juan for more! I will definitely be posting a review on Cruisecritic.com and Cruisemates.com telling everyone about the tour! Thanks Debbie! For anyone wondering what to do in S J for the evening...without a doubt, you have to take the Night Tales tour with Debbie. She is beyond awesome. In regards to being in your 30's and finding it interesting...YES! I'm 35 and loved it. We were actually 15 minutes late for the tour due to arriving at the port late. The tourism office contacted her while she was already guiding a tour and she arranged a meeting place for us! The information was spectacular, the places she showed us were spectacular. We wouldn't have seen what we saw if it hadn't been for this tour. She told stories with such passion and always was sure to not only point out the great photo ops, but also to take pictures of us as well. I could have toured all night! Additionally, we wanted to eat somewhere where the locals would eat. We don't like tourist type places and always want to experience the local food. She took us to Mojito's which was also spectacular! We let our waiter pick our dishes for us and he did a fantastic job! And if you like drinking Mojitos...the best can be found here.

Based on Debbie's tour alone, this was a huge highlight of our trip and has truly made me want to return to San Juan to actually vacation, not just port. When we returned to the ship and compared tours with the people that went through the ship, they were quite jealous of our adventures with Debbie. Like I said, anyone going to SJ should take this tour! Thanks again Debbie for everything!

[Replying to a question about the tour]

Well, she starts at the Tourism office where they give you a free rum punch. Then she walks through the city pointing out the cathedrals, the city gates
that immigrants entered into upon arrival (different ones for the poor or rich) and tours some of the historical buildings. I couldn't give it justice. She spices
it up with stories of those that lived and ruled there. The stories are fascinating. She will answer any of your questions, and recommend stores and
restaurants. The city blocks are small and she gives rest stops. When we go back, we will take the day tour for sure! She has lots of repeat customers.
The other two couples with us were on their second tour with Debbie.
