Guajataca subtropical moist forest - "The largest hiking trail system of Puerto Rico"

Tour Description:

A licensed tourist guide by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company with a certified driver will pick up the group in an air-conditioned vehicle in the San Juan, Condado, Isla Verde, Isabela and Aguadilla hotel area.  Our staff  will be holding a sign that says Legends of Puerto Rico at the entrance of the hotel. The tour commences when departing from the meeting point.  A knowledgeable guide fluent in English will provide general information about Puerto Rico and the forest.

Hiking Trails - The Guajataca forest has the largest hiking trail system of Puerto Rico.  It has a system of twenty-seven (27) miles [44 Kms.] of trails that offers an excellent opportunity to appreciate the flora and fauna of this unique habitat.  All 46 trails are in their natural stages, well maintained, designed for foot travel only and where outlined by the Civilian Conservation Corps between the 1930's and 1940's.

Location - The Guajataca subtropical moist forest is located in the northwest section of Puerto Rico.  It takes approximately an hour with forty-five (1:30) minutes drive from San Juan.  We travel on highways, state roads, municipality roads and the forest's scenic roads in an air-conditioned van.

Geography - The forest is considered an unique natural area because of its tropical karst topography (limestone derived soils) characterized by clusters of sub conical haystack hills called "mogotes", separated one from another by rounded or funnel shaped depressions which are locally know as "sumideros".  Hiking is made on soil and karst trails.

Fauna & Flora - The natural areas of the forest provides habitat to many species of animals, 45 bird species and 186 trees species.  In this subtropical moist forest two associations of vegetation have been identified:  one on the hillside and another on the tops of the limestone hills.
