The Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA) – Government mass transit buses

There are three types of bus:  Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA), Tour buses and Públicos

The Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA) was created as a public corporation under the Law Num. 5 of May 11, 1959.  It was integrated into the Department of Transportation and Public Works in 1973.

AMA facts:

  1. The bus stops are identified with signs colored with a green background with white lines and in Spanish – “Parada”.  You must wave at the bus drive to stop and pick you up.
  2. The AMA services 7 municipalities in the Metropolitan area and it has 30 routes.
  3. Daily transports 210 passengers in 247 buses.
  4. The regular fare is .75¢ and .75¢ for the MI and M II lines.
  5. The rate is 35¢ for seniors 60 to 74 years of age and older and handicaps.
  6. Free rides for passengers 75 years of age and older.
The bus signs are colored in green, written in Spanish and easy to identify.

Updates:

1.   May 23, 2005 - Begins the Metropolitan Bus Authority new routes that connects with the train stops.

When in the metropolitan area, notice that the buses travel on its exclusive lanes and drive in opposite direction to the traffic.  The reverse bus lane system began in 1971.

Mass public transportation is only available in the Metropolitan Area and is time consuming. A local resident or native tourist guide with experience would know how to lessen the waiting time.

Remember that hiring a native guide is a great value and guides can often recommend the best places to shop, eat, and stay and the best ways to get around, often saving you time and money.

 

Taking the AMA bus towards Old San Juan... Allow waiting time at the bus stop.

 

  • From the Condado area, take bus B21, (75 cents) approximately a 30-minute ride.

At the Normandie and Caribe Hilton Hotels you also have available the M1 bus (50 cents) and B21 (75 cents), approximately a 20-minute ride and get off at the last stop in Old San Juan.

  • From the Miramar area, take bus A-5 (75 cents) or M1 (50 cents), approximately a 30-minute ride and get off at the last stop in Old San Juan.

  • From Isla Verde Avenue, you can take bus A5, (75 cents) a 60-minute ride, and get off at the last stop in Old San Juan.  

Allow waiting time at the bus stop.
